Sunday excursion to the flower island Mainau.
Once a year we are drawn to the beautiful flower island of the Bernadottes family near Constance. The family excursion was announced this year: big children, parents and 94-year-old grandma arrived until lunchtime to reach the island of Mainau via a footbridge.
Already the beautifully decorated footpath amazed us: flower arrangements in the form of animals lined the first paths into the interior of the island. On a circular trail, we saw flower beds with summer flowers, flowery meadows with insect hotels, ancient trees, pony rides and a huge sand/water playground for children.
We absolutely had to go to the butterfly house, sooooo we hadn’t seen many colourful big butterflies from the Amazon region for a long time… Before we visited the rose garden, we stopped at one of the numerous restaurants and made a short detour to the palm house, where travelling exhibitions are located.
What should I say: like little children we got glittering eyes at the sight of the rose garden and were amazed at the variety of strongly smelling and odourless rose blossoms. “The Queen of the Rose” was our favourite, a strongly scented rose of vanilla, lemon,… A wonderful family afternoon went by much too fast. On the way home, we took a break at the shore of Lake Constance, enjoyed Italian ice cream and salad, before we arrived safely at home in the evening driving into the sunset.
