On the way home from Borken – we were invited to a wonderful English/German wedding – we didn’t want to sit in the car all the time and the family decided to make a detour to Cologne. Said, done and we parked in the banking district, very close to the banks of the Rhine. In the morning, already 25 degrees in the shade, we walked along the banks of the Rhine towards the Musical Dome, along with the railway station. A colourful hustle and bustle prevailed along and on the Rhine.  Many drinks and food stands invited us for a “High Noon” drink. Excursions on the Rhine could be booked. We were drawn purposefully to the Hohenzollern Bridge. Whoever passes the Hohenzollern Bridge will not only notice Cologne Cathedral but also thousands of small and colourful padlocks: Couples in love have labelled them with name and date and attached them to the railing of the bridge in order to swear eternal love and loyalty. The key is traditionally thrown into the Rhine together. Wow… we had never seen anything like it before. The oldest castles we found date back to 1989, so we had to eat a cool drink and small delicacies before heading home.

Our conclusion from the short trip to Cologne

Cologne is worth a visit at any time of the year, especially in summer. The culinary and cultural offer is stunning. There is something to suit every budget. We will definitely be back, maybe next time to visit the cult hippie musical “Hair” in the Kölner Philharmonie. Let’s have a look…
